Information/references/resources

Art

FireAlpaca - Free digital drawing and painting software. Traditionally not the most popular in its class, but the official library of downloadable brushes made it my drawing software of choice after I started having problems with my copy of Photoshop. Plus, it has a great name.

Photopea - In-browser recreation of Photoshop. It's free to use with ads (which can be removed for a small monthly fee) and excellent for touch-ups, light photo editing, GIF editing, etc. It can get a bit memory-heavy, so be careful with larger projects!

Language

DinOrdbok - Online Norwegian dictionary that translates words between Bokmål, Nynorsk, Sami, and a whole host of other languages, including English, Russian, and Vietnamese.

Merriam-Webster - The print dictionary guys are online, too! I mostly have this here because I once had a high school teacher who ranted about how everyone goes to Dictionary.com when Merriam-Webster is better and can be accessed by typing just m-w.com. I feel this is information that everyone should have.

Weblio - Online Japanese dictionary with one of the more reliable Japanese-English machine translators on the web. That said, I still recommend only using machine translation on individual terms or phrases when translating from Japanese due to the context-heavy nature of the language.

Zalgo Text Generator - Some̢t́i͠més,̡ ̛ýou͢ ҉just ́ģott̵a͘ h̛a̴v̛e so͢me ͠m͘ès̕sed̡-u̧p̶ ̢t͜ext

Petkeeping

AqAdvisor Aquarium Stocking Calculator - Tool to help plan your aquarium stocking based on aquarium size, filtration, and livestock species. It's not without limitations, so be sure to individually research each species you plan to stock, but it's a helpful guideline.

Pop culture

Chrissie's Transcripts web site - Transcripts of Doctor Who and Star Trek episodes that have been televised in the UK.

Dalek Colour Schemes and Hierarchy - Color and design references for every Dalek to appear in televised Doctor Who and the 1960s Peter Cushing movies.

Henrique Alvim Corrêa’s Illustrations for The War of the Worlds (1906) - 100 years and a zillion adaptations later, Corrêa’s illustrations remain some of the most tense and eerie depictions of The War of the Worlds, even with his delightfully cartoonish interpretation of the tripods.

Wikipedia's lists of Doctor Who episodes - When a show has gone on for 60 years and has had over 800 episodes an episode list becomes invaluable to even a casual watchthrough. Useful for watching Classic/Showa-era Who, but full-on necessary for watching the 2005 Heisei/Reiwa revival series, as both streaming services and physical media very often do not include the specials or minisodes in the correct order, even when they're important to the continuity.

Science

Aurora Alerts by Soft Serve News - Realtime data on various factors that contribute to auroras and how to interpret them.

Birds of America Illustration Plates - Hundreds of vintage bird illustrations by John J. Audubon. High resolution scans can be downloaded for personal, non-commercial use.

iNaturalist - International database of natural observations by an open community of naturalists and citizen scientists. Also available as an app for identifying or contributing from the field! See also Artsdatabanken for a similar project specific to Norway.

The Old Farmer's Almanac - Helpful guide for deciding when to plant vegetables within the USA. As seen in US history textbooks.

Entertainment

Film/video

ALTER and DUST - Hundreds of short films from different filmmakers available to watch via smart TV apps or YouTube. ALTER is horror and DUST is science fiction, both are divisions of the studio Gunpowder & Sky.

Den stora älgvandringen - Footage from cameras along a moose migration passage across the Ångerman River in Sweden. Streams live on SVT Play in spring.

MC Championship - One of the best-run and nicest-looking Minecraft tournaments yet. 10 teams of 4 streamers compete in 8 different games for the honor of being crowned MC Champions. The games involve a range of skills and most reward team success over individual placement, encouraging teamwork and communication. Tournaments are typically held once a month on a Saturday.

Omeleto - YouTube channel hosting hundreds of short films.

Thousandsuns Cinema - Online film festival hosted by Media City Film Festival. A flashing red dot indicates a film that is currently free to view online (the film festival is not always in progress).

Games

Art Fight - Annual month-long art trading game where artists draw each other's characters to earn points for their team. It's a great way to meet other artists and receive art of your original characters. The game is held every July, but join or login a bit earlier to pick your team and/or prepare your profile!

Flight Rising - Virtual pet site... with dragons! Customize, breed, and battle with a lair full of your own dragons. The art is spectacular and the site updates frequently. I'm there as soyrwoo #23551, come say hi!

Neopets - THE virtual pet site. It's gotten a bit run down over the years, but it still exists with most of its old features intact and still has regular updates, contests, events, and mini-plots. I've been there as soyrwoo since 2004. Be sure to keep a tab open to Jellyneo while you play for the optimal experience.

Thirteen (2048 Doctor Who edition) - The simple, but frustrating, number game with Dr. Whos from Hartnell to Whittaker in place of the usual numbers.

Worldle - Guess the daily country based on its silhouette

Music

Gakku - Music channel dedicated to showcasing modern Kazakh music and culture. Their YouTube channel contains music videos, interviews, and live performances. And it's full of bops.

Podcasts/radio shows/audio dramas

Forest 404 - Science fiction thriller series from the BBC about a woman who finds an old audio recording of a rainforest in a future with no trees. Stars Pearl Mackie (Bill Potts in Doctor Who). Each episode is accompanied by a talk by an expert in a related field and a binaural nature soundscape.

Other media

17776 (a.k.a. What football will look like in the future) - By the creator of The Tim Tebow CFL Chronicles, a story about friendship, what it means to be alive, and American football. Creatively told, heartfelt, and makes incredible use of its medium. Remarkably little understanding of football is necessary to follow the story.

オモコロ (Omocoro) - Japanese comedy site with articles, blog posts, comics, videos, and radio shows contributed by a team of creators that I've wasted so much time reading. The source of many memes that leave the Japanese net and get passed around without context or attribution, which is a shame because the context adds so much.

The Useless Web - A link that takes you to a random "useless" webpage. It may be a game, a gag, a coding experiment, or an art project, but it's guaranteed to be fun. Some pages feature loud sounds and some pages feature flashing lights and colors, so use with caution.

Based in the USA and ships internationally.

Urban Farmer - Seed and plant retailer with a wide variety of heirlooms and native plants. Sells seeds for everything from small scale gardening to commercial farms. Ships internationally, but with some restrictions for countries outside of the USA and Canada.

The origin of that horse mask and the inflatable unicorn horn for cats. Based in Seattle where they have a physical store (and for a while had two), they currently only ship within the USA, but you can still find their products through other distributors.

Paleozoic Pals by the Paleontological Research Institution - Plush toys based on your favorite prehistoric icons, including the famous Eurypterid body pillow. Based in the USA and ships internationally.
